This week we are releasing three publications to mark the end of the 12th grade social studies elective "Rebirth of a Nation – Contemporary Poland".

During February break five students from the course traveled with Shmuel and Lisa Cohen to Poland to experience the country first hand together with Polish students with whom we had been in contact since the beginning of the year.

A summary of this visit is included in the Heschel edition of the Mały Przegląd student newspaper that has been distributed to all students. The newspaper includes articles from each one of our students about different aspects of the visit, and two additional articles by two of the Polish students with whom we experienced Poland. This special edition can also be accessed online at heschel.org/littlereview

A separate limited edition booklet also appeared this week. It includes expanded versions of the students' articles and two additional pieces that were submitted by Kayla Weingarten and Ariella Goodman. This booklet can be accessed online at heschel.org/rebirthofanation

All the students in the course completed final projects that are available on request. Sophia Katz's final project placed sites from the first eighteen years of the life of our namesake Abraham Joshua Heschel on a map of Warsaw. The map is now hanging on the hall wall near Bonnie's office.

Heschel Clubs Meet With Amal School Network

Recently, the Israel Affairs Club, the Israeli Arab Pen Pal Club, and the Robotics Club had the opportunity to meet high school students from The Amal School Network in Israel. In addition to traditional academics, the Amal School Network runs numerous schools that teach students about entrepreneurship and how to start their own business ventures. Seven students presented their ideas to us. They were not only extremely poised, smart, and passionate, but their ideas were well developed and innovative. As an entrepreneur myself, I was inspired by The Amal School Network and their students for making school go beyond the classroom and for promoting innovation entrepreneurship. I hope that schools around the world will adapt Amal's program to help support our generation as we aspire to do great things and make a difference.

Father Patrick Desbois Addresses 10th and 11th Grade Students

On Tuesday May 3, 10th and 11th grade Heschel students were invited to hear Father Patrick Desbois speak at the La Salle Academy in the Lower East Side, as part of the school's commemoration of Yom Ha'Shoah.

Father Patrick Desbois is a French Catholic priest who has dedicated the last 12 years to identifying and documenting the sites of Jewish and Roma mass executions in Eastern Europe during World War II. He currently teaches a course at Georgetown on this topic.

La Salle Academy is an all-boys Catholic school, the majority of its school population stem from immigrant families. The Heschel Inter-faith club connected with the La Salle students earlier in the year at an exhibition on the work of Father Patrick Desbois at the UN.

Father Desbois seeks to unsilence a chapter of history that is largely unknown. In the former Soviet Union, he seeks out eyewitnesses to the executions of Jews and Roma as he work towards identifying each execution site and mass grave.

Desbois message to the students was inspirational:

"By learning from the past and educating in the present, we work to prevent genocide and mass killings in the future."

Students learnt that today across the world, there are people who are inspired by Hitler's tactics to exterminate a group of people. Father Desbois reminded us that today it is not enough to remember those that lost their lives during the Holocaust, but to speak up and act out against the injustices that we see in the world today.

High School Transitions from Yom HaZikaron to Yom HaAtzmaut With Meaningful and Celebratory Programming

Last Wednesday afternoon, the high school transitioned from Yom HaZikaron to Yom Ha'atzmaut, with help from the 10th and 11th grade bands. Students sang three songs, starting with more somber melodies and ending in great excitement, to mark our beginning of Yom Ha'atzmaut.

On Thursday, the high school celebrated Israel's 68 years of independence with a full day of festive programming! The day's theme was "How does Israel inspire me." Programs pushed students to think about this question and develop new answers.

Students and teachers danced and sang in our high school "chagiga," or celebration. The Israel Affairs Club taught the school about this year's Yom Ha'atzmaut theme in Israel - everyday heroes in Israel and their contributions. We also announced the very exciting news from 11th grader Leo Grunschlag. His grandfather, Professor Leslie Leiserowitz, won the 2016 Israel Prize for Chemistry and Physics, one of the country's highest honors.

After Israeli dancing, the high school and fifth grade met Ted Comet, the founder of the Celebrate Israel Parade. He spoke to our students about the power of Jewish Peoplehood and inspired us all to think about how we can use our talents to support our Jewish community and Israel. We then revealed this year's Heschel shirt design for the parade, designed by two ninth graders, Abbey Rose and Audrey Laboz.

Following Israel trivia and and Israeli lunch, students chose one of five inspiration electives.

  1. Viewing the documentary, "Mekonen" about an Ethiopian Jew's journey to Israel and through his IDF service.
  2. Exploring art by Israeli artist, Michal Nachmany.
  3. Practicing techniques of Krav Maga from IDF veterans.
  4. Learning about the work of Innovation Africa, and organization that brings Israeli innovation to African villages.
  5. Experiencing Israel's history through song, by a concert from MusicTalks.

We ended the day with a thrilling three-on-three basketball tournament, Hoops4Hesed. All proceeds from the tournament are helping our semester cause, Shanti House in Israel, a warm home for youth at risk.

Heschel Students Perform at Classic Stage Company, Winning Honorable Mention

On June 16 three Heschel students--Chloe Weinstein, Mirina Rosen, and Yanniv Frank--headed down to Classic Stage Company (CSC) to perform a scene from Shakespeare's Othello, the murder of Desdemona. The students were participants in CSC's Shakesmack, a competition in which students from around the city prepare scenes from a Shakespeare play and perform the play relay style. This scene is particularly challenging as it involves highly charged emotions that students had to fully embody, and they did so with aplomb. Take a moment to see their performance.

Math Team Places 2nd in Competition

On May 25th, the Heschel Math Team competed in a Math Bowl held at SAR Academy. The competition focused primarily on math theory as opposed to pure computation. The topics covered ranged from knowledge of mathematical theorems and hypotheses, biographical information about famous mathematicians, number theory concepts, and many other areas of math that are not covered in a standard high school curriculum. Playing against other Jewish day schools and yeshivot, Heschel won all three of its opening matches against Ramaz, Westchester Hebrew High School, and MTA. The team earned a place in the finals against TABC, the reigning champion and heavy favorite going into the competition. Despite putting up a truly valiant effort against TABC, Heschel lost and took home the 2nd place trophy. Nevertheless, this marked an important milestone for the Heschel Math Team. After many years of growth, Heschel finally was able to prove itself as a dominant force. Congratulations to the entire team-- Paul Horvath '16, Palmer Paul '16, Grace Gilbert '16, Jeremy Spiera '17, and Nathan Finkle '17-- their coach, Mrs. Farah Farhadian, and everyone else who contributed to the team's success.
