Gilles Clavreul, France's Inter-Ministerial delegate to fight against anti-Semitism and racism, visited the Heschel High School on Thursday morning with members of the American Jewish Committee. Gilles addressed the seniors explaining how he had been appointed by France's President, particularly following last year's tragic killings at Charlie Hebdo and the Jewish market in Paris. He repeated that both the President and Prime Minister of France feel strongly that French Jews have been a part of French society for 2000 years, and that their exodus to the U.S. and Israel represents a loss for France and all of Europe. He said that a rise in anti-Semitism is a tragedy for France and all its democratic principles and values. After answering student questions (in a very eloquent English), M. Clavreul toured the school, had lunch with some students and faculty, then joined the 12th grade French class for further discussion entirely in French.
